SAAC Community Service Activities
Mountain West Conference institutional SAAC committees participate in a wide variety of community service activities. Below are samples of activities that our committees organized and participated in.
Air Force Academy:
Read with the Falcons: Air Force student-athletes visited elementary schools in Colorado Springs through out the school year.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day: The Air Force women athletic teams offered free sports clinic to all girls eighth grade and younger followed by free admission to the women's basketball game.
Penrose-St. Francis Blood Drive: Coaches, student-athletes and athletics staff donated blood to the local community hospital.
Adopt-a-School: Air Force athletic teams interacted with elementary schools in an after-school program. A different team visited the school every other Wednesday during the academic year.
Brigham Young University:
Run for Their Lives: The BYU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped with timing, organizing and assisted as course marshals for the "Run for Their Lives" 5K run that helps kids with life-threatening illnesses.
Hygiene Kits: The BYU and Utah SAAC committees teamed together to prepare hygiene kits for battered women's shelters in the Salt Lake Valley.
Food Drive: Student-athletes worked in conjunction with the BYU alumni association to put on a food drive during the week of the football game against the University of Utah.
University of New Mexico:
Run for Relief: The Run for Relief benefits children with cancer, and is run by the Student Letterman's Association at UNM. Students are encouraged to run at least 2 miles, and to receive $20 in pledges.
San Diego State University:
AIDS patient drive: The men's basketball team organized a food and personal items drive for SPECIAL DELIVERY, an organization that helps individuals with AIDS.
University of Utah:
Lincoln Elementary: A variety of Utah athletic teams helped out at Lincoln Elementary School, a poorly funded school in Salt Lake City. The student-athletes organized sports activities for the students during their break times.
U of U Neighborhood Partners: Student-athletes participated in games and activities at the local neighborhood park (Jordan Park).
University of Wyoming:
Elementary school reading: Student-athletes read to local elementary school students through out the academic year.
